Upgrades to version 2.6 from all other versions are free to registered users. Before upgrading, it is wise to save a copy of all your old Right On Time files.
I will be sending out upgrade announcements to all registered users over the next couple of weeks (it is now 5/17/94). If you don't receive one, you should contact me with your updated email or mailing address.
UPGRADING FROM VERSION 2.5:
You will have to reselect all your preferences when running this version for the first time. I have renamed the preferences file to "Right On Time Preferences", mainly to guarantee starting with a fresh new file to eliminate any possible file problems. Some people have reported intermittent crashes with version 2.5 when saving prefs; hopefully, those problems will be solved with this version.
The file format has not changed. You can simply replace your version 2.5 application with this new application, and keep all your other files.
Read the "Change History" file for a fairly complete list of changes. There is one significant change to the way alarms are handled now. In the past, an event "notice" was always given at the event due time. Also, you had the option of another event "warning" which was given some time before the due time. Now, no warning/notice is given at all at the due time unless you select the "alarm" option. If you attach an alarm to an event, it will occur at any time you specify, either at the due time or before that. When the alarm dialog appears, the ROT application is automatically brought to the front and you have the option of deferring the alarm. IF YOU ARE USING SYSTEM 6, ROT will never bring itself to the front, so the only alarm notification method you may choose is the menubar type.
UPGRADING FROM VERSION 2.0 OR EARLIER:
With version 2.5 of Right On Time, a new file format has been introduced. YOU MUST CONVERT YOUR OLD EVENTS FILES TO THE NEW FORMAT!!! Use the application "ROT Utilities" to convert your old Events files into new ones. In the future, "ROT Utilities" will include more import and export options, along with other goodies, which don't need to be in the main application.
The new file format was required to support the new extended date range of Right On Time 2.5.
As a safety precaution, before converting to the new file format you should save a backup copy of your Events and Old Events files, as well as your previous version of Right On Time (you make regular backups anyway, right?). As an additional precaution, you should delete your existing "Right On Time Prefs" file (located in your Preferences folder) before using the new version.
Your new, converted Events files may not appear with the correct icon at first. As long as you have older versions of Right On Time laying around, the Finder will be confused. Sooner or later (after rebuilding your desktop and storing old versions of ROT somewhere else), the new icon will appear.
